The two female Malaysian students could face up to three months in jail and six cane strokes after a sex toy was found in their room during a 'hotel raid' by religious officers.

02 SEPTEMBER 2014 | BY DARREN WEE

A lesbian couple was arrested by religious officers yesterday during a raid of a budget hotel in Malaysia.

Nine officers from the Johor Islamic Religious Department raided their room in Johor Bahru at around 12.45am, the Sinar Harian newspaper reported.

One of the women answered the door while the other was naked in the bathroom.

The women, both students aged 20 and 21, were not initially suspected of breaching 'close proximity' laws but officers became wary when the women remained silent as they searched the room.

When a sex toy was found, one of the women admitted they were a lesbian couple. On further questioning, she said they had not yet used the toy, which had just been removed from its packaging after recently being bought online.

The women were arrested for lesbian sex under section 26 of the state's Shariah law and taken to a police station for booking, then to the religious department's office for further action.

They could face up to three months in jail, six cane strokes and a fine of RM5,000.

Sisters In Islam (SIS) has urged the religious department to conduct a thorough investigation of the women.

SIS legal officer Rashidi Abd Rahim told the Raykat Post that the news report failed to show any criminal element and prosecutors had to prove that a sex act had taken place.

"Otherwise we will open the flood gates with people prosecuted based on an accusation," he said.

He added that he hoped the women would be given adequate legal representation.

During our stay at The Club at the Saujana Resort, one of our favorite experiences was an evening of dining delights prepared by the incredibly talented and humble Chef Filippo Giunta. Our evening began at the bar with some cocktails. We liked the lightly bubbly Senja Martini (40RM) and the fruity A Touch of Summer in Italy (28RM), though we should note that a wonderful selection of wine is the focus at this venue in terms of beverages.

The venue itself is exquisite, with a patio along the lakefront that runs the entire length of the restaurant and beauty in the indoors decor and details as well as the outdoors view out onto the water. With plenty of windows, beautiful dining arrangements and elegant furnishings, Senja is a place you'll want to come back to again and again, even if just for the cozy and splendid atmosphere.

The Italian menu is filled with items that you can't go wrong in choosing. We tried so many of these, and it was difficult to pick favorites, considering everything we sampled we absolutely loved. We began with some warm breads - a combination of flatbreads with herbs, reminiscent of pizza crust dough, a sun-dried tomato focaccia, and a classic wheat bread.

Soon after arrived the Insalata di Pere ed Endiva Belga con Dressing al Gargonzola e Noci (30RM), a perfectly delicious Belgian endive and pear salad with lightly sweet gorgonzola sauce and walnuts - we absolutely adored this salad.

Then arrived the Spaghetti all'uovo Nuova Carbonara (45RM). The spaghetti is made from scratch by Chef Fillipo and the eggs in this dish are poached at precisely 64 degrees. The result is perfectly scrumptious.

The Vitello Tonato (a delectable dish of traditional Piedmont veal with tuna sauce, 52RM) was impressive, as was the Zuppetta di Pesce e Pomodorini Freschi, a wonderful full bodied seafood soup with tomato (45RM).

The signature Pizza Senja (54RM), delicious with a thin crust and topped with buffalo mozzarella and bresaola (air-dried beef), came sprinkled with shaved parmesan, arugula, and halved tomatoes: perfect in its flavorful simplicity.

The Fagottino di Merluzzo in Crosta di Pistacchio, Brodetto di Pomodoro e Quinoa (85RM) was fantastic as well: the white fish's crust infused with fennel seeds in just the right amount along with mussels and tomato veloute.

The Tonno in Crosta di Sale e Zucchero, Crema ai Cannellini, Peperonata e Cipolle Marinate (a seared, crusted tuna dish, 70RM) made the mark again. We also tried (and loved) the Petto D'Anatra Arrostito con Crema di Carote, Cipollotti Caramellizati e Salsa al Vino Rosso (pan seared duck breast in carrot cream, 95RM) and the Carre di Agnello con Patate al Rosmarino, Crema di Sedano Rapa e Salsa al Pepe Nero (an Australian rack of lamb with rosemary baby potatoes, 95RM) - all incredible dishes.

Finally, for dessert (just when we thought we'd have no more room!) we were too easily persuaded to try the Chef Filippo's Tiramisu della Casa con Crema Morbida al Mascarpone e Caffe (beautifully moist and lightly sweet, 29RM) and the Tortino Morbida al Cioccolato con Croccantino e Gelato alla Vaniglia (29RM), a stunning and devilishly good lava cake with berries and vanilla gelato.

To cap off the night's indulgences, we were served some fiery Sambuca and Grappa. What an incredible night of exquisite dining pleasures!

The scene at the Majestic is one that transports the guest back in time, where the immersive scenery can magically bring you from modern day, busy KL to times past. The Sunday Curry Tiffin Lunch (RM 78++) at the Colonial Cafe, set in the classic wing of the hotel, is a nostalgic escape from the here and now, and a flavorful one at that. Each Sunday from noon to 2pm, the iconic and beautifully restored hotel sets the stage for a truly 'majestic' Sunday midday diversion of traditional colonial-era Malaysian comfort food, served as it was to the elite customers of days past.

The Colonial Cafe grants indulgent comfort at its best, and on any given Sunday, one can enjoy the luminescent natural light that filters in through the open spaces of the converted air shaft or find a cozy space at a table under warmly lit lamps in the main area near a classic bar and grand piano. Isabella Solianos, of the Solianos band family plays the piano and sings on Sundays during the Tiffin Lunch.

Moving past the ambiance of the landmark setting and onto the midday fare, our course began with an array of lovely samplings set upon banana leaf as paints on an artist's palette. The meal begins with a Salted Lassi beverage to open and refresh the palate. Condiments arrived, free flowing and continuous, serving as their own starting session of traditional delicacies. We were presented with savory Fish Puttu, Crispy Bitter Gourd (painstakingly cultivated and selected by the Majestic team through a long process of trial and error), Pineapple and Banana Slices (to calm spice), Mango Chutney (a much liked version at our table), Salted Egg (presented in small feta-like cubes), Toasted Coconut and Toasted Salted Peanuts. This initial presentation was perfectly delightful in the variety of flavors, colors and aromas.

The preceding array of condiments supports four main dishes, the Hainanese Chicken Curry, the Mutton Varuval, the Egg Masala, and the Fried Masala Fish. All traditional specialties honed and crafted to represent the much honored flavors of years past, our favorites were the chicken curry and the mutton, which were beyond delectable. The entire main dish experience was quite excellent.

In topping off a wonderfully delectable meal, we were presented with time honored Sago Gula Melaka, coconut-y and sweet, adorned with a cubed mango flourish. Hot Masala Tea perfectly closed the lovely Sunday tiffin meal, as we took in our enchanting surroundings.  If only every Sunday lunch could be so divine!

If the idea of sticking around The Majestic for a while longer appeals to you, then we suggest checking out the Smoke House Lounge and Bar, complete with Cigar Room.  Here you will find a privileged drinking, smoking, and billiards establishment (games can be played in the adjoining Card Room), complete with pool table and smoking jackets for use upon request. Our drinks were rewarding, and each came with a unique background story - the cocktail menu alone is something to ponder over. Cocktails are reasonably priced in the mid RM30's, and there is a substantial variety of single malt whiskies. We enjoyed the Brandy Crusta, The Jungle Bird, the Tanqueray Blue, and an interesting signature: The Colt 55.  Be sure to read the colorful, vintage back-stories for each of the drinks you order.

Head downstairs and you will discover a further clandestine space; behind a hidden door (of course!) the small and swanky cinema Screening Room with leather recliners that plays reels of old film favorites in black and white on end (make a request if the room is empty - it's all yours in which to relax and enjoy a cocktail from the bar). If you find yourself in need of a bit of male pampering, and you are of the required gender, make a visit to the old-time barber shop Truefitt & Hill, just beside the screening room. A truly nostalgic experience, even for those who haven't chanced to experience the real deal oh-so-long ago.

Other enclaves within the hotel to check out: The Drawing Room (an elegant private lounge available for booking), the Orchid Room (book for tea or a private event, but be prepared for a wait - current bookings for tea are two months out) and the Reading Room (a quiet alcove for quietly taking in an array of literature). All in all, expect a dignified and captivating visit to a landmark of KL history.

Reasons to visit: Majestic ambiance, attention to detail, superb tiffin lunch experience, further unique escapades within the classic wing of the hotel.

Mixed Sashimi Platter - Kogestu, Saujana Hotel

If elegantly prepared, classical Japanese cuisine is your style, then you absolutely must pay a visit to Kogetsu at the Saujana Hotel - particularly since there is an all-you-can-eat weekend lunch special with a twist. Rather than simply partake in a typical help-yourself buffet, the Kogetsu offers something a bit more classy - for RM99, a diner may order as many items from the specially designed a la carte menu, and these will be served up to you at the table in classic dining style. The options are numerous, of high quality, and all presented beautifully by Kyoto born Chef Taketoshi Minami.

The ambiance alone is enough to warrant a visit. Sitting right on the water, with expansive glass windows looking out over a small lake and hotel grounds, it's distinctly classic and beautiful, made in the style of a traditional Japanese countryside restaurant. We enjoyed sitting near the window, taking in the natural light and water views. Naturally, we were first brought a cleansing washcloth and served hot green tea. Salted edamame followed shortly after, and then we began our sampling of the '99 Dishes' menu.

Some of our favorite samplings were the Shirauo Karaage (crispy fried and salty little sea creatures), the classic Agedashi Tofu, the Wakame Kyuru Su (a soup-like seaweed salad prepared with vinegar), an assortment of sashimi samplings (over a dozen options, including the Shiro Maguro - yum), and two simmered dishes: Niku Jaga (a beef with potato stew) and Shimeji Aburaage Ni (bean curd skin). The Nigiri and Makimono were beautifully prepared and delectable (try the Hamachi and Anago), and the Soft Shell Crab Tempura was equally delicious. Unagi Kabayaki, grilled eel with sweet sauce, was loved by all (even by one who normally dislikes the strong flavor of unagi), as was the homemade garlic chips on grilled beef tenderloin, prepared in classic teppanyaki style.

Just to be sure we didn't miss anything, we tried the traditional Cha Soba (cold green tea noodles, beautiful in its simplicity) and the Niku Udon Matawa Soba (Sliced beef noodles in hot broth), which perfectly 'hit the spot' at our table.

For dessert, we enjoyed the much loved Green Tea Ice Cream as well as the Grilled Gelatinous Rice Cake and Red Bean (grilled mochi and azuki, for those who recognise this old favorite). If you are at all like us, and you enjoy a spot of sake with your meal, we should note that there is a nice selection available in addition to an array of other classic and Japanese style beverages.
