But it seems the compact rental sleeping areas are catching on abroad. If you thought Japan was the only place you could crawl into a compartment just longer than your body, you'll be surprised to find that you can now have a similar claustrophobic experience in Malaysia. Conveniently located in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA2), "Capsule" by eco-friendly hotel chain, Container Hotel, is a capsule hotel designed for short overnight stays or quick freshen ups between flights. It is the very first of its kind in Malaysia and has a somewhat industrial feel to it. ▼ It almost looks like a warehouse, complete with shipping crate-style walls. The official Capsule by Container Hotel website asserts that their hotel is "great for a short stay, and for people who are trendsetters, value-smart, and eager to experience a Capsule styled lodging without worrying about lengthy stop-over." Judging from the photos, each sleeping compartment looks pretty comfortable, with even a small "entryway" to place your slippers. ▼ It has a very sleek, minimalist feel. But despite its somewhat creepy design, there are a number of other common-area features listed on the website to make you feel nice and comfortable: If you find yourself with a lot of time to spend in Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the check-in process to start your "hassle-free, artful, and unique experience" is easy. Simply receive your access card, locker key, and amenity bag with towel at the front desk. Next, place your belongings in your locker and exchange your shoes for a pair of slippers. The tall, arched windows of the airy, marble-floored lobby remind me of those in Colonial era buildings over on peninsula Malaysia and Singapore. A member of staff greets me with a tray bearing cool, floral scented towels and offers a glass of refreshing juice. I hand my passport to the receptionist and she bids me to sit down. A masseuse swiftly goes to work on my neck and shoulders. Five minutes later, when the welcome massage is complete, I'm handed my room key. The check-in process has proven unexpectedly pleasant. I'm allocated one of the Grant Merchant Class rooms, up on the fourth floor. The spacious room has a king-sized four-poster bed; a romantic touch that's also a reminder of the days when mosquito nets were a nightly requirement in this region. Standing on my balcony I look to the forested hillside then down at the shops within Telaga Harbour Park, adjacent to the hotel. A retractable screen by the bathtub divides the bathroom from the bedroom. Pulling it back means I'll be able to have a steep while watching live Premier League football on the 42-inch flat-screen television. Inside the bathroom I find his and hers toiletries by twin wash basins. There's also a walk-in rainfall shower. Down on the ground floor I head to Straits and Co for a tiffin lunch that includes traditional Malaysian dishes such as beef rending and steamed vegetables. The round, marble-topped tables and wicker-backed chairs are reminiscent of a Continental café. I learn this is also the spot to head for afternoon tea. After lunch I decide to explore my surroundings and pop into the library, above Straits and Co. The neighbouring room hosts a games room with a selection of board games. I learn that in Sahibba, the Malaysian version of Scrabble, the letter A scores 11 points before entering the pool room. When I first heard about the Danna the idea of swimming lengths in the hotel's 51.20 metre infinity pool was one of its chief attractions but picking up a cue to play a couple of frames is also a means of unwinding. I continue my tour up on the fifth floor, peeking into the fitness room before spending a relaxing hour on a massage bench, allowing a diminutive masseuse to knead knots out from between my shoulder blades. Dinner is served in the Planter's, the restaurant overlooking the pool. I select a Malaysian-style chicken perchik curry, served in a halved coconut with steamed rice. I see the chefs at work in the open kitchen but feel it would be inappropriate to ask them how they prepared the dish. After eating I walk past the poolside – where barbecue buffets are held each Friday evening, accompanied by live music and dancing – in order to take a stroll along the Danna's private beach. Before retiring I head the Veranda bar for a nightcap. The uniformed barman suggests a house special, based on the Mojito, and I agree. Sipping it, I watch a singer and a guitarist perform their set then head up to my bedroom. Although some said the city is boring, Shah Alam has a lot of attractions to be visited such as the Blue Mosque and i-City. One of the hotels that we can consider to stay at is Hotel de ART, located at Section 7, Shah Alam. ++++ PROS & AMENITIES The reception area. Hotel de ART is categorized as a boutique budget hotel and people tend to have a negative perception with the word 'budget'. Nevertheless, this hotel is not your typical type of budget hotel. It is so artsy, it is also dubbed as the first art-themed hotel in Malaysia. The ceiling at the reception. A classy look with a decent price. The first place that I went to was the reception area, to check-in. Despite its limited space, it is comfortable enough, with sofas for other members of the group to wait at and a TV to entertain them. They also sell can drinks apart from having a water dispenser there. The staff are also friendly, it was not a hassle during my check-in. Waiting area at the reception. Hotel de ART has 58 rooms and all rooms have different themes such as Mickey Mouse, Lady Gaga and Paris. As for my room, I was assigned a nature-themed room and it suits me well since being an excursion from my busy days, having such a room definitely provide comfort for me. The corridor at one of the floors. The room itself, though not so big, has many amenities. It has a prayer mat for Muslims, mosquito repellent, coffee facility and a working desk. So, if one is on a business trip, this hotel is comfortable enough yet will not burn a hole in the pocket. The bed is so comfortable! Trust me… I was there! As for the bed, I was really shocked when I lied down on it. It was so comfortable and the comforter was very thick, I fall asleep in the matter of second! Working desk for the workaholic in you. Another amenity that I wish to highlight is the fact that it has water dispenser near the staircase, which is good if one wants a glass of ice-cold water. Hotel de ART also teamed-up with Hailam Kopitiam, so all guests will receive a voucher for free breakfast at the Kopitiam, situated downstairs. Though choices are limited, this is definitely a plus point for a boutique budget hotel. This is so thoughtful. In terms of security, the access card is needed to access the main door (if your room is situated in a different block like mine) and the room. I would say that it is safe enough, as there are also CCTVs around. CONS & SETBACKS One of the setbacks for the hotel is the location. Although strategically located at Section 7 beside a lake, the means of public transportation to go here is mainly the taxi. There are Rapid KL buses but the frequency is unreliable. The spotless bathroom. Apart from that, this hotel is separated into 3 different blocks. The block where my room was located has no lift and it could be a hassle for the elderly and for those who bring a lot of luggages. The coffee making facility. Choices for coffee making is also limited as they only give a sachet of Nescafe 3-in-1, but since this is a boutique budget hotel, I don't consider that as something that is too serious. Having the Jumbo is a bless. Overall, this is a really nice hotel to stay in. Their Taste of Malaysia promotion, running until next Thursday, is bringing the sunny flavors of Malaysia to Kerry's Kitchen, thanks to the skills of Executive Chef Stephen Teo and guest chefs Sunny De Costa, Yap Chee Khee, and Chai Seek Khuan. The buffet features more than 35 traditional dishes, including a number of Peranakan dishes. Peranakan dishes are a unique blend of Chinese, Malay and other influences, created by the descendants of early Chinese migrants who settled in Penang, Malacca, Indonesia and Singapore, inter-marrying with local Malays. Typical ingredients and flavors include coconut milk, pandan, candle nuts, belachan (shrimp paste), chili, and tamarind, among many others. Other dishes in the buffet showcase the wide array of influences on Malaysian cuisine, including Indian, Dutch, and Portugese. Don't miss dishes: 1. Roti canai with chicken curry – flaky, buttery breads served with a fragrant chicken stew 2. Nenas sambal belachan – chucks of fresh pineapple in a spicy shrimp paste 3. Udang cili garam – huge deep-fried prawns tossed with chili and salt 4. Kari debal – tender, on-the-bone chicken curry cooked in aromatic spices 5. Although some said the city is boring, Shah Alam has a lot of attractions to be visited such as the Blue Mosque and i-City. One of the hotels that we can consider to stay at is Hotel de ART, located at Section 7, Shah Alam. ++++ PROS & AMENITIES The reception area. Hotel de ART is categorized as a boutique budget hotel and people tend to have a negative perception with the word 'budget'. Nevertheless, this hotel is not your typical type of budget hotel. It is so artsy, it is also dubbed as the first art-themed hotel in Malaysia. The ceiling at the reception. A classy look with a decent price. The first place that I went to was the reception area, to check-in. Despite its limited space, it is comfortable enough, with sofas for other members of the group to wait at and a TV to entertain them. They also sell can drinks apart from having a water dispenser there. The staff are also friendly, it was not a hassle during my check-in. Waiting area at the reception. Hotel de ART has 58 rooms and all rooms have different themes such as Mickey Mouse, Lady Gaga and Paris. As for my room, I was assigned a nature-themed room and it suits me well since being an excursion from my busy days, having such a room definitely provide comfort for me. The corridor at one of the floors. The room itself, though not so big, has many amenities. It has a prayer mat for Muslims, mosquito repellent, coffee facility and a working desk. So, if one is on a business trip, this hotel is comfortable enough yet will not burn a hole in the pocket. The bed is so comfortable! Trust me… I was there! As for the bed, I was really shocked when I lied down on it. It was so comfortable and the comforter was very thick, I fall asleep in the matter of second! Working desk for the workaholic in you. Another amenity that I wish to highlight is the fact that it has water dispenser near the staircase, which is good if one wants a glass of ice-cold water. Hotel de ART also teamed-up with Hailam Kopitiam, so all guests will receive a voucher for free breakfast at the Kopitiam, situated downstairs. Though choices are limited, this is definitely a plus point for a boutique budget hotel. This is so thoughtful. In terms of security, the access card is needed to access the main door (if your room is situated in a different block like mine) and the room. I would say that it is safe enough, as there are also CCTVs around. CONS & SETBACKS One of the setbacks for the hotel is the location. Although strategically located at Section 7 beside a lake, the means of public transportation to go here is mainly the taxi. There are Rapid KL buses but the frequency is unreliable. The spotless bathroom. Apart from that, this hotel is separated into 3 different blocks. The block where my room was located has no lift and it could be a hassle for the elderly and for those who bring a lot of luggages. The coffee making facility. Choices for coffee making is also limited as they only give a sachet of Nescafe 3-in-1, but since this is a boutique budget hotel, I don't consider that as something that is too serious. Having the Jumbo is a bless. Overall, this is a really nice hotel to stay in.
