The Danna <b>Hotel</b> on Langkawi, <b>Malaysia</b> | Go - Eat - Do

Posted: 06 Dec 2014 03:00 AM PST

A doorman wearing a khaki uniform, a pith helmet and a smile and welcomes me to the Danna hotel on Langkawi, Malaysia.

The tall, arched windows of the airy, marble-floored lobby remind me of those in Colonial era buildings over on peninsula Malaysia and Singapore. A member of staff greets me with a tray bearing cool, floral scented towels and offers a glass of refreshing juice. I hand my passport to the receptionist and she bids me to sit down. A masseuse swiftly goes to work on my neck and shoulders. Five minutes later, when the welcome massage is complete, I'm handed my room key. The check-in process has proven unexpectedly pleasant.

I'm allocated one of the Grant Merchant Class rooms, up on the fourth floor. The spacious room has a king-sized four-poster bed; a romantic touch that's also a reminder of the days when mosquito nets were a nightly requirement in this region. Standing on my balcony I look to the forested hillside then down at the shops within Telaga Harbour Park, adjacent to the hotel.

A retractable screen by the bathtub divides the bathroom from the bedroom. Pulling it back means I'll be able to have a steep while watching live Premier League football on the 42-inch flat-screen television. Inside the bathroom I find his and hers toiletries by twin wash basins. There's also a walk-in rainfall shower.

Down on the ground floor I head to Straits and Co for a tiffin lunch that includes traditional Malaysian dishes such as beef rending and steamed vegetables. The round, marble-topped tables and wicker-backed chairs are reminiscent of a Continental café. I learn this is also the spot to head for afternoon tea.

After lunch I decide to explore my surroundings and pop into the library, above Straits and Co. The neighbouring room hosts a games room with a selection of board games. I learn that in Sahibba, the Malaysian version of Scrabble, the letter A scores 11 points before entering the pool room. When I first heard about the Danna the idea of swimming lengths in the hotel's 51.20 metre infinity pool was one of its chief attractions but picking up a cue to play a couple of frames is also a means of unwinding.

I continue my tour up on the fifth floor, peeking into the fitness room before spending a relaxing hour on a massage bench, allowing a diminutive masseuse to knead knots out from between my shoulder blades.

Dinner is served in the Planter's, the restaurant overlooking the pool. I select a Malaysian-style chicken perchik curry, served in a halved coconut with steamed rice. I see the chefs at work in the open kitchen but feel it would be inappropriate to ask them how they prepared the dish.

After eating I walk past the poolside – where barbecue buffets are held each Friday evening, accompanied by live music and dancing – in order to take a stroll along the Danna's private beach.

Before retiring I head the Veranda bar for a nightcap. The uniformed barman suggests a house special, based on the Mojito, and I agree. Sipping it, I watch a singer and a guitarist perform their set then head up to my bedroom.

<b>Hotel</b> Review: <b>Hotel</b> de ART, Shah Alam (<b>Malaysia</b>) – Where to Stay <b>...</b>

Posted: 23 Nov 2014 08:00 AM PST

Shah Alam is the capital city of Selangor. Although some said the city is boring, Shah Alam has a lot of attractions to be visited such as the Blue Mosque and i-City. One of the hotels that we can consider to stay at is Hotel de ART, located at Section 7, Shah Alam.

++++

PROS & AMENITIES

The reception area.

Hotel de ART is categorized as a boutique budget hotel and people tend to have a negative perception with the word 'budget'. Nevertheless, this hotel is not your typical type of budget hotel. It is so artsy, it is also dubbed as the first art-themed hotel in Malaysia.

The ceiling at the reception. A classy look with a decent price.

The first place that I went to was the reception area, to check-in. Despite its limited space, it is comfortable enough, with sofas for other members of the group to wait at and a TV to entertain them. They also sell can drinks apart from having a water dispenser there. The staff are also friendly, it was not a hassle during my check-in.

Waiting area at the reception.

Hotel de ART has 58 rooms and all rooms have different themes such as Mickey Mouse, Lady Gaga and Paris. As for my room, I was assigned a nature-themed room and it suits me well since being an excursion from my busy days, having such a room definitely provide comfort for me.

The corridor at one of the floors.

The room itself, though not so big, has many amenities. It has a prayer mat for Muslims, mosquito repellent, coffee facility and a working desk. So, if one is on a business trip, this hotel is comfortable enough yet will not burn a hole in the pocket.

The bed is so comfortable!

Trust me… I was there!

As for the bed, I was really shocked when I lied down on it. It was so comfortable and the comforter was very thick, I fall asleep in the matter of second!

Working desk for the workaholic in you.

Another amenity that I wish to highlight is the fact that it has water dispenser near the staircase, which is good if one wants a glass of ice-cold water. Hotel de ART also teamed-up with Hailam Kopitiam, so all guests will receive a voucher for free breakfast at the Kopitiam, situated downstairs. Though choices are limited, this is definitely a plus point for a boutique budget hotel.

This is so thoughtful.

In terms of security, the access card is needed to access the main door (if your room is situated in a different block like mine) and the room. I would say that it is safe enough, as there are also CCTVs around.

CONS & SETBACKS

One of the setbacks for the hotel is the location. Although strategically located at Section 7 beside a lake, the means of public transportation to go here is mainly the taxi. There are Rapid KL buses but the frequency is unreliable.

The spotless bathroom.

Apart from that, this hotel is separated into 3 different blocks. The block where my room was located has no lift and it could be a hassle for the elderly and for those who bring a lot of luggages.

The coffee making facility.

Choices for coffee making is also limited as they only give a sachet of Nescafe 3-in-1, but since this is a boutique budget hotel, I don't consider that as something that is too serious.

Having the Jumbo is a bless.

Overall, this is a really nice hotel to stay in. If you want a short staycation or on a business trip, or just want to stay in a hotel once in a while, this hotel is definitely worth the price you paid for.

MIRI: An armed man robbed a budget hotel of RM969 on Wednesday.

In the incident around 3.15am, the unknown man is said to have entered the hotel at Jalan Melayu and pointed a sharp object, believed to be a knife, at the cashier.

He is said to have demanded the key to a room for him to collect something that supposedly belonged to his friend.

Feeling threatened, the cashier reluctantly handed over the key. The suspect then went to the room and when he returned minutes later decided to ransack the cashier's counter.

He took the cash with him and then fled the scene. A police report on the incident was filed at the Miri Central police station.

Often thought as an excellent choice as a business hotel, the Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur surprises us with some deals and services that also position the property as a fine option for leisure travellers or a staycation.

Reception

Location

On the edge of the Golden Triangle, Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur is ideally located for business and pleasure. The monorail stop is less than five minutes walk away and the brand new shopping centre, Quill City Mall, is directly across the road. The nightlife and party district of Heritage Row runs up one side of the hotel, with many entertainment facilities, housed in pre-war shop houses, open until all hours of the morning. Masjid India, where fabrics, markets and an endless array of local food can be savoured, is only a few blocks away. All of this is within walking distance of the hotel.

Only a few minutes further afield by taxi, on the LRT or via monorail, are the rest of the sights that Kuala Lumpur is known for such as the KL Tower, Petronas Towers, Chinatown, Brickfields (Little India), the restaurant and bar strip of Changkat Bukit Bintang, and numerous and enormous shopping malls.

Engaging the hotel for a weekend staycation however, might see you never leaving the property, as the food and beverage outlets, entertainment options and facilities furnish more than enough to occupy a few days. Many guests find the prices here too of good value especially compared with other 5 star hotels in the city centre. Those with a Starwood Preferred Guest card (free membership) are often delighted with various promotions providing discounts ranging from 15 – 50% off meals and activities.

Facilities

Sheraton Club Lounge

Club Rooms and Suites come with access to the Sheraton Club Lounge where breakfast, cocktails and beverages are served over different periods of the day. Located on the top floor it offers splendid views of the city and in particular, a postcard perfect vista of the KL Tower and lush verdant base.

The morning offerings are a light mix of continental and local options with eggs made to order. During the day, hot and cold non-alcoholic beverages are served with a few small snacks such as biscuits and nuts. The evening cocktail runs for a generous two and a half hours and serves a free flow of wine, beer and bottom shelf spirits accompanied by a spread of finger foods of both Asian and Western inspiration. If you've been out on a culinary tour of Malaysia's local street food scene during the day, you might find it's all you need to end the day very pleasantly.

Fitness and Relaxation

The lagoon shaped swimming pool on level five is shaded by umbrellas and lush tropical vegetation. Fountains spurt into the pool at one end and the KL Tower ascends above the resort-feel space reminding guests that they really are still in the city centre. Light refreshments and sun-lounger service is supplied by the poolside bar.

The gymnasium is of good size with all the equipment we need to get in a solid workout. Cardio machines by Technogym include steppers, cross trainers, bikes and treadmills. A variety of free weights and strength machines, along with mats, balls and a dedicated stretching area, round out our training sessions. TV screens (controlled by separate remote controls – none of those annoying touch screen devices that never seem to react to my touch) were in good functioning condition as were the headphones, which seems to be the exception not the rule in many of the "5 star" hotels we've written about in Asia. The area is paved with light gym flooring, and that combined with a wall length window and mirrors gift the gym a bright cheery feel.

Relaxation facilities shared with the spa are in top condition. Lockers, showers, a steam room, Jacuzzi and lounges make for an overall rejuvenating experience.

Celestial music, grand spherical ceilings and delicate floral wall patterns set the scene for the Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur's spa, Mandara Spa. Once inside, we're gently ushered to the lounge and refreshed with cool scented towels and chilled ginger tea. Influenced by traditional health and beauty routines from Indonesia, Thailand and Hawaii, a range of treatments include massage, scrubs and wraps, facials, foot and hand care, herbal steam showers and aromatherapy baths.

Beauty Treatment Area

Claimed to be the most relaxing massage on the menu, the Balinese Massage (RM195 – 50 minutes) sounds like just what we need after a long purposeful week of work. Using 100% pure essential oils our bodies are stretched and pounded with long strokes from the palm of the hand and thumbs. Our therapists dig deep into our tight muscles and manage to work out knots and relieve tension.

Afterwards we rinse off the extra oil in the outdoor shower. Surrounded by greenery it's hard to believe we're in the heart of Malaysia's capital. In inclement weather there's an indoor facility too, but we take advantage of the sun and rare blue sky and luxuriate in the chance to bath al fresco.

Food and Beverage

Villa Danieli

When we first arrived to Kuala Lumpur over a decade ago, Villa Danieli was the name whispered by expat friends as the best Italian restaurant in the city. While the kitchen has seen some magnificent chefs come and go, the permanent local staff here seem to have such a passion for cooking and service that Villa Danieli has managed to maintain a consistently strong reputation this whole time.

Design transports you to the rolling hills of countryside Florence. Mimicking a spacious Tuscan villa, walls are painted with frescoes, high arches draw the eyes toward tall ceilings, and the flames of a wood-fired oven toast the edges of their contents sending saliva-inducing aromas to the noses of diners. We've enjoyed more than our fair share of wine-paired dinners here and they have certainly been some of the highlights of our culinary adventures in Kuala Lumpur. Follow this link to find a recent food and grape matching experienceat Villa Danieli.

Pavilions Lounge

Pavilions Lounge occupies a grand area. It's hard not to feel regal in such a majestic space. Towering ceilings, winding striking staircases and soft lounge chairs upholstered in royal blues and purples set the stage for a refined afternoon or evening of cultivated conversation and supping. It's a fine spot to sip on a Wine of the World, or TWG Tea and listen to the cascading water feature or elegant live music.

Essence

Essence is the Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur's all day dining venue. A fiery red and orange mosaic backs the open kitchens, and a glass roof lets in natural light. The vibrant design joins forces with colourful displays of food forming an overall cheerful climate. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet style, and in between a la carte options, the food exiting the kitchen here hails from around the world. Regularly changing internationally themed menus, festive season promotions and some great deals such as free flow wine for an additional RM50++ keep guests returning.

Rooms

Deluxe Rooms make up well over 200 of the 385 rooms available at the Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur. A palette of orange and pale olive green washes the décor with hues reminiscent of those found in traditional Thai design. Solid wooden furnishings and warm glowing lamps add character and an impression of long-lasting quality. Sheraton Sweet Sleeper Beds, lavish Indian silk linens, big soft pillows and black out curtains, provision all rooms with excellent conditions for a sound night's sleep.

A brand new capsule hotel just opened...in Malaysia4

Capsule hotels were something of an anomaly when first introduced to the world through pictures taken in Japan. But it seems the compact rental sleeping areas are catching on abroad. If you thought Japan was the only place you could crawl into a compartment just longer than your body, you'll be surprised to find that you can now have a similar claustrophobic experience in Malaysia.

Conveniently located in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA2), "Capsule" by eco-friendly hotel chain, Container Hotel, is a capsule hotel designed for short overnight stays or quick freshen ups between flights. It is the very first of its kind in Malaysia and has a somewhat industrial feel to it.

The official Capsule by Container Hotel website asserts that their hotel is "great for a short stay, and for people who are trendsetters, value-smart, and eager to experience a Capsule styled lodging without worrying about lengthy stop-over." Judging from the photos, each sleeping compartment looks pretty comfortable, with even a small "entryway" to place your slippers.

Each capsule comes with a few convenient amenities (though no TV like the capsule hotels in Japan):

•   2 Pillows
•   Foldable table
•   Hangers
•   Individual ventilation
•   Privacy blind
•   Personal locker / drawer
•   Reading light
•   Power socket
•   Phone (self-setting alarm calls enabled)

However, hallways and corridors of the hotel look like something straight out of a sci-fi thriller.

But despite its somewhat creepy design, there are a number of other common-area features listed on the website to make you feel nice and comfortable:

If you find yourself with a lot of time to spend in Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the check-in process to start your "hassle-free, artful, and unique experience" is easy. Simply receive your access card, locker key, and amenity bag with towel at the front desk. Next, place your belongings in your locker and exchange your shoes for a pair of slippers. From there, you're free to use the hotel's showers, common areas, or crawl into your cubby hole for some rest.

▼ Washroomreservation4

▼ Showersreservation3

A three, six, or twelve hour stay is priced at RM45 (US$14), RM70 ($21), and RM90 ($28); a very reasonable price even considering the small size of the accommodations. Reservations are encouraged, so be sure to stop by the Capsule website prior to your stay. With clean facilities, convenient amenities, and a very reasonable price, we wonder if more international hotels will take a cue from Capsule by Container Hotel and bring this Japanese-original even further abroad.
