Classic Inn Premium offers a very good location, in Bukit Bintang KL, with clean and quiet rooms and good wifi. There is a large mall right across the street with plenty of places to eat (along with some places to eat on right next to the hotel).

Rooms are a bit small, but fine. The things they could do to improve the rooms are to put more small tables in to put things on, there is space for them and almost no other space to put things on. The showers are nice (good water pressure, hot water and high – 8+ feet, which is nice when you have some places you have to duck to get your head in). The bathrooms are the normal budget SE Asia toilet/shower combo which might seem odd to some but these are above average.

They have computers to use for a small fee and you may print for a small fee too.

The counter staff could be more knowledgeable (for tourists and transport, etc.) – they were average, but I have had several hotel recently with very knowledgeable staff and it makes a big difference. The breakfast is good – no choice for what you get, but it is a better than average free hotel breakfasts.

photo of Classic Inn Premium room

That is all there is in the room other than the bed. Which is ok, but a bit more space to put stuff on would be nice.

Classic Inn Premium is a good choice for those wanting value for a good price. The Classic Inn (regular) is 2 or 3 doors away (that is where breakfast was served while I was there).

Monorail Station – Imbi is .3 km away (less than a 5 min walk).

This beautiful private hotel of only 18 suites, initially a row of seven 19th century Anglo Chinese terraces, sits in the very heart of the island's World Heritage Site.

Itt is the brainchild of hoteliers Karl Steinberg and Christopher Ong, winners of the 2007 UNESCO Award of Distinction for heritage conservation.

Hotel Penaga -

The Arts, Greenery and Comfort, All in One Beautifully Restored Heritage Property

A Green Surprise in George Town

The grounds of Hotel Penaga are a refreshing surprise amidst the sultry concreted George Town centre. Three beautifully restored heritage buildings comprise the block and in between the structures are stoned pathways lined with lush gardens. It's a breath of fresh air (literally) to see so much green making both a pleasurable start to the day and a very welcome respite after hours of traipsing the streets exploring the UNESCO and culinary sites within walking distance of the hotel.

Outdoor Tables and Gardens

Owners clearly value the natural environment and a number of programs and awards support their efforts. Solar panels generate both power and heat water. A rainwater tank captures roof runoff and, the kitchen separates organic waste for composting. Recycled materials, salvaged from demolished buildings, were used wherever possible to restore the structure. The garden too is thoughtfully landscaped using mostly indigenous plants and is designed to reduce heat and glare. These and other actions earned Hotel Penaga a Gold rating by the Green Building Index, the first for a heritage restoration in Malaysia.

Artistic Inspiration

One of a few, if not the only hotel on the island, that supports an "artist in residence" program, rooms and common areas are filled with tasteful artworks from masters from around the world. Paintings, photographs, sculptures and mixed media pieces fit seamlessly into the setting inspiring guests with their diversity and messages for the world.

Hutton Rooms

Our room, in the Hutton building is a decent 40 square metres and extends the most affordable rates. A balcony tiled with heritage ceramics is just big enough for a coffee table and two chairs. A roofscape, broken up with green foliage, is the view.

Dark wood frames the doors and windows, with stained glass letting in colourful rays of light. The lounge features restored timber floors and reconstructed Chinese antique furniture. Cable TV, a mini-bar, safe, complimentary Internet and, tea and coffee making facilities (standard tea bags and instant coffee) add comfort.

A set of stairs leads to the loft where comfortable beds, bedside tables and lamps make up the bedroom. Linens and the mattress are snug encouraging peaceful dreams.

Although the bathroom maintains its distinct heritage feel with antique furniture and dark wood paneling, modern conveniences are integrated seamlessly to provide a very comfortable bathing experience. A corner Jacuzzi sports powerful jets and the shower pressure too is strong - there's no wait for hot water to run through the pipes.

It's a beautiful space and we feel that even while sleeping, we're living the sites of Penang. The experience might only be bettered with a personalized welcome, such as a pot of tea or local treat.

Breakfast

Breakfast is included in most packages and is served in the very pleasant atmosphere of Cinnamon Restaurant. Black wood and maroon cushioned chairs seat cream marble tables. White china and napkins and a single flower vase dressing the tables and uniformed waiters give the space a feel of elegance of the past. Taking full advantage of their green surrounds, a wall of folding windows open up to the lap pool, which borders the restaurant and gardens across from it. It's hard to believe we're in the middle of George Town.

The morning spread is a simple offering of mostly Western flavours. Fresh fruits, pastries and breads, cereals and a number of hot dishes including the usual fry up of mushrooms, sausages and tomatoes, some rice and noodles, are on the buffet. Eggs are made to order and coffee and tea is brought to the table. It's simple, but enough to begin the day well.

Other Food and Beverage

Cinnamon Restaurant is opened throughout the day for a la carte meals and, the Tanglung Bar and Library Lounge serves a range of mixed drinks, wine and beer. We try their Penaga Punch, a mix of gin and tropical juices, garnished with a slice of pineapple and maraschino cherry. It's sweet and refreshing, a welcome respite from the afternoon heat.

Relaxation

A lap pool is filled with salt water, reducing the amount of chemicals used in the hotel, and is lined with garden chairs and umbrellas and, headed with a sun deck. It is a popular place for relaxation throughout our visit, with ladies catching some rays and taking a break from seeing the sites mid morning and afternoon.

The Penaga Spa by Tanamera is located in the gardens of the hotel. An airy patio holds the reception area, which benefits from the natural green surrounds and lovely art pieces by a number of the resident artists Hotel Penaga has hosted over the years. One of the earliest artworks is a feature wall, a mosaic of broken tiles, stones and ceramics that provides an inspirational backdrop to the entrance. Round stained glass windows filter the outdoor light leaving muted hues in the treatment rooms.

Three double rooms are fully equipped with a separate changing room including shower, sauna and toilet. All rooms have a claw foot bathtub, which is a wonderful thing to soak in after a body treatment.

Indigenous plants from the region are used as the primary ingredients in their spa products, which feel natural and unprocessed. I partake in a Warming Massage (60 minutes RM175), which combines a dry scrub and massage into one session and, Hubby tries the Malay Traditional Massage (60 minutes RM140). Our therapists are gentle sweet ladies, best suited for those who prefer a light to medium strength massage.

We'd definitely stay at Hotel Penaga again. We appreciated the greenery, artwork and beautiful heritage restoration. Added benefits of a spa, hotel restaurant and bar, and salt water filled lap pool are appealing bonuses.

Reasons to visit: a beautiful heritage building in the heart of George Town; a green garden haven rare to find in the town centre; artworks everywhere; great location; a Gold rating by the Green Building Index.

We're greeted with a cool peppermint towel and hot hibiscus tea as we meet our therapists and fill out a questionnaire highlighting our areas of need, any injuries or special considerations. It's here too where we choose an aromatherapy oil of our liking. Herbal, ginger, coconut, coffee and basil are all options, but we both find the tropical scent of coconut the most alluring. Indigenous plants from the region are used as the primary ingredients in Tanamera's spa products, which feel natural and unprocessed.

I partake in a Warming Massage (60 minutes RM175), which combines a dry scrub and massage into one session. Tanamera's powder is adapted from the principles of Ayurvedic udsadana and features turmeric, ginger and rice powder as the main components. As it's a dry application is helps to warm the skin and is not the sticky gooey mess I often find is the case with wet body scrubs. It's claimed to increase circulation and have detoxifying properties, which in turn leave the skin feeling silky soft and reduce cellulite. It's such a relaxing setting I nod off a couple of times during the scrub down. A rose petal and jasmine flower bath finishes the session and slices of fresh lime are given to help remove excess scrub.

Hubby tries the Malay Traditional Massage (60 minutes RM140), which is a nice change from the common Balinese and Thai massages offered everywhere else. It celebrates the traditional Malay techniques of stretching, stepping, long kneading strokes and pressure applied to various parts of the body. Hubby also receives a 30 minute Body Compress, which is complimentary when you book a 60 minute massage (until May 31, 2014). Mangosteen peel, various roots, lemon grass, kaffir lime peel and galangal not only emit a refreshing aroma, but too discharge their natural oils leaving the skin lightly moisturized after the treatment. Our therapists are gentle sweet ladies, best suited for those who prefer a light to medium strength massage.

MANILA - The property firm of former trade minister Roberto V. Ongpin has sold its entire stake in the Shangri-La at the Fort to the property arm of Malaysia's Kuok Group.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, Alphaland Corp said its wholly owned subsidiary completed today a deal to sell its 20 percent interest in the hotel to units of Shang Properties Inc for a cash consideration of P1.7 billion.

The upscale leisure developer's divestment comes at a time when it is faced with difficulties, stemming from its dispute with former controlling shareholder Ashmore Group.

According to Alphaland, the UK-based fund had refused to fund the property developer and had intended to divest but has yet to find a buyer for its stake. Banks had declined to lend money to Alphaland amid uncertainty over the ownership structure of the Philippine firm.

Alphaland last January called for more capital from shareholders, allowing the Ongpin group to wrest control of the property developer.

The PSE has suspended trading of Alphaland shares since January 20 as the bourse evaluates the repercussions of a disclosure related to the alleged simulated sale of the company's shares in 2012 so the firm can maintain its listed status. The bourse is also reviewing the leisure developer's recent issuance of shares pursuant to a property swap and capital call.

Last month, the PSE found Alphaland in violation of its rules for failure to submit full, fair, accurate and timely disclosures of material information. Citing the property firm's repeated violations of disclosures rules, the bourse initiated involuntary delisting procedures over the company and its securities.

Alphaland is entitled to a delisting hearing under the Exchange's Rules on Delisting.

Malaysia Airlines to end hotel stays for MH370 families | The Herald

Posted: 01 May 2014 03:01 PM PDT

Malaysian JetKUALA LUMPUR. — Malaysia Airlines will cease to provide hotel accommodation for relatives of missing flight MH370 passengers by May 7, the airline said yesterday.
The Malaysian flag carrier has provided hotel accommodation for relatives in a number of countries —most of them in Malaysia and China —where it provided them periodic updates on the situation since shortly after the flight mysteriously disappeared on March 8.
But relatives' tempers have repeatedly flared, particularly at the Lido Hotel in Beijing where Chinese families have regularly lashed out at officials from the Malaysian government and the airline over their inability to explain the plane's disappearance on May 7.

"Instead of staying in hotels, the families of MH370 are advised to receive information updates on the progress of the search and investigation and other support by Malaysia Airlines within the comfort of their own homes, with the support and care of their families and friends," the airline said in a statement.

"In line with this adjustment, Malaysia Airlines will be closing all of its family assistance centres around the world by 7 May, 2014."
Wen Wancheng, whose son was on the flight, said that relatives have come under pressure from time to time to leave the hotel and go back home, but was adamant that they would refuse to do so.

"Today MAS brought this up officially and we're not going to accept it," he told AFP, referring to the airline.
"They made the commitment in March that they wouldn't drive us out of the Lido until any wreckage was found," he said.

The government-controlled carrier also said it would soon make advance compensation payments to the next-of-kin of the 239 people on-board the plane, part of a final package to be agreed upon later.

It did not specify the amounts.
Wen, the Chinese relative, expressed concern about the payments.

"It has to have a legal basis," he said.
"Is this for relatives' mental damages or the casualties of our family members on-board?"

About two-thirds of those aboard the missing plane, which vanished from radar en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, were Chinese nationals. The airline also had provided psychiatric support at hotels for families trying to cope with the tragedy.

The carrier said it would establish centres in Beijing and Kuala Lumpur to provide "follow-up support and services" but gave no further specifics.
A Malaysia Airlines spokeswoman declined to offer further details when contacted. —AFP.

Chicago. Frustrated relatives of passengers on the missing Malaysian Air jet held the carrier's staff in a Beijing hotel ballroom for more than 10 hours as they demanded the Malaysian government give a fuller accounting of Flight 370.

Tensions have been rising among the mostly Chinese family members over incomplete or conflicting reports shared by government officials as a submarine hunt for the Boeing 777 has failed to yield any debris. A relative of a missing passenger attacked Kalaichelven Shunmugam, Malaysia Airlines' security supervisor, kicking him in the knee in an April 22 incident, the airline said.

The latest skirmish started when 10 airline staff gathered with about 200 family members at 3 pm on April 24, at Beijing's Metropark Lido Hotel, where the carrier has provided regular updates on the hunt for the missing aircraft.

Staff members were made to wait in the hotel ballroom while about 60 relatives went to the Malaysian Embassy in an attempt to get a government official to attend the session. They were released at 1:44 am local time yesterday, according to a statement on Malaysia Airlines website.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak told CNN's Richard Quest on April 24 that he's prepared to release a preliminary report on the mysterious flight next week and isn't yet ready to declare the plane and its passengers lost.

"At some point in time I would be, but right now I think I need to take into account the feelings of the next of kin — and some of them have said publicly that they aren't willing to accept it until they find hard evidence," Razak said.

Elusive hunt

That's proven elusive for a Bluefin-21 unmanned underwater vehicle, which has combed 95 percent of the initial search area over 13 missions. The hunt will expand to regions next to the 10-kilometer radius it was searching in the Indian Ocean if nothing is found, Australia's Joint Agency Coordination Centre said in a statement yesterday.

"We are currently consulting very closely with our international partners on the best way to continue the search into the future," the JACC said in the statement.

Widening the seabed area would be the next phase in the search for the Malaysian Airline System Bhd. plane that vanished March 8 with 239 people on its way to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur. At 50 days, the effort to find Flight 370 is the longest search for a missing passenger jet in modern aviation history.

The Bluefin-21 submarine has been searching for about two weeks to find wreckage. It's bouncing sound waves off the pitch-black Indian Ocean floor to create images of the seabed in hopes of pinpointing debris from the plane.

The current search zone lies about 1,584 kilometers northwest of Perth, Australia. As many as eight military aircraft and 10 ships were involved in yesterday's search, JACC said.
