Any advice on how much a cab will cost from airport to hotel Penaga?

Also, we booked online and paid a deposit. However, we have been emailing the hotel several times but to no avail. There is simply no email response. Does anyone staying in Georgetown know why or it's quite common?

2. Re: hotel nearest to subtrannean intl convention centre

Tricky one.

Bayan Baru is almost down by the airport and well away from the main concentration of hotels in Georgetown.

Hotels in that area tend to be 4* or 5* catering to the high end business market.

There are frequent buses with stops along Jalan Tun Dr Awang and Jalan Mahsuri. Look for Rapid Penang bus 302, 303, 304, 305, 307, 308, 309 and 401E.

From Georgetown is will take about 1 hour + / - depending on traffic, time of day and which bus.

MyNewsHub | French Group Accor Plans More Hotels In Malaysia

Posted: 26 Jan 2014 11:18 PM PST

KUCHING – French hotel group Accor is rapidly expanding its network in Malaysia, with 15 new hotels nationwide in the pipeline by 2016.

The new hotels coming up in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah will provide about 2,600 rooms. By next year, the group's Malaysian network is expected to more than double to 20 hotels with over 5,000 rooms from the current eight hotels.

Senior vice-president for Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore Gerard Guillouet said the Europe's leading hotel operator saw Malaysia as one of South-East Asia's top tourism destinations.

"Malaysia has a lot of potential for us to grow. We are focusing our energy to aggressively develop more hotels in the country across all market segments.

"The mix of hotel segments in the pipeline indicates that we will continue to have a well-balanced network in 2015, with 15% of the hotels being upscale, 40% mid-scale and 45% being economy hotels," he told StarBiz.

He said the network would also be geographically balanced, with hotels in strategic business and leisure destinations throughout the country.

Accor's existing eight hotels in Malaysia are under three of the group's 11 brands. The three are Pullman, Novotel and ibis Styles hotels. They are Pullman Putrajaya, Pullman Bangsar, Pullman Kuching, Novotel Kota Kinabalu, Novotel Kuala Lumpur City Centre, ibis Styles Fraser Perak, ibis Styles Cheras, Kuala Lumpur and ibis Styles Ipoh.

The 513-room Pullman Bangsar opened for business last month.

"We expect to open at least four hotels this year. They include Novotel Melaka (374 rooms), Mercure Kota Kinabalu Eton (103 rooms) and ibis Styles Sandakan Waterfront (135 rooms)," said Guillouet.

According to him, Accor would have 25 hotels in 11 Malaysian cities and towns by 2017 based on committed projects under construction.

He said Accor aimed to be Malaysia's leading international hotel operator by 2017 from its current ranking of among the top five.

Guillouet said Accor hotels in Malaysia which opened at least three years ago were now recording average occupancy rate of between 75% and 80%, adding that the newer hotels would need time to build up their occupancy rates.

He gave the thumbs-up to the Government for putting in place good infrastructure that was essential for tourism development.

"Everywhere you go, there are excellent airports like in Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. What is also important (for tourism development) is efficient immigration and customs services," said Guillouet, who returned to serve Malaysia two years ago. His first posting in this country was in 1991.

He said Accor recorded some 300 million visitors to its website and generated 25 million room nights in its hotels last year.

He said as Accor saw faster growth in Asia for upscale and luxury hotels, the group was in the process of shifting its marketing base to Singapore from Paris.

Accor currently operates four hotels in Singapore where its office will take over worldwide marketing for the group in the first quarter of this year. – The Star

All 10 hotels nationwide that were nominated for the Asean Green Hotel Awards 2014 clinched the title in a ceremony held here in conjunction with the Asean Tourism Forum 2014, together with another 76 hotels from the region.

The 10 hotels are Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa Kota Kinabalu, Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort Tuaran and Nexus Resort Karambunai Kota-Kinabalu from Sabah; Riverside Majestic Hotel Kuching and Miri Marriot Resort and Spa (Sarawak); Mandarin Oriental Hotel, The Shangri-La Hotel and Renaissance Kuala Lumpur (Kuala Lumpur); The Andaman Langkawi (Kedah) and The Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa (Penang).

The winners from Malaysia received their prizes from Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, while the winners from the other countries received theirs from their Tourism Minister.

Earlier, Mohamed Nazri, in his speech, said there was an increasing demand by tourists for hotels which adopt green practices, but the number of such hotels is not many.

Mohamed Nazri said the Green Hotel Award is also seen as an integral initiative to support the current work of Asean to develop the Asean Ecotourism Strategic Plan which promotes responsible tourism and green practice in the tourism industry.

"The primary objective of this award is to provide the well-deserved recognition to hotels that go beyond conventional practices and embark on green and environmental friendly measures in support of responsible tourism," he said.

He also said it was as to recognise the mutual benefits and opportunities derived through networking, collaboration and working in partnership within Asean member states, the private sector and non-governmental bodies.

Met by reporters after the event, Mohamed Nazri said Asean was the only body in the world which has a special body to discuss tourism development, that is ATF.

"Although we compete to attract tourists, but we compete in a healthy manner and at the same time, help one another on how to develop the tourism industry in Asean," he added.

A Nostalgic Dinner

Colonial Café

Our white-jacketed host leads us with aplomb to our crisp yet comfortable table in the atrium of the Colonial Café. Ambient lighting warms grandiose pillars, enhancing the creamy golds and toning browns of the inviting décor and soft tones of live jazz float through from the band in the bar - just enough to create atmosphere but not intrude on conversation. I'm transported in time to the glamorous 1930's, when elegant colonials graced the corridors of the Majestic. The recent refurbishment remains true to the hotel's origins and is richly deserving of national heritage status.

A choice of house made Brioche or Rye Bread is offered with the menu, certainly be careful how much you nibble of these generous portions and keep good appetite for the main event. The Café's menu is classic British sprinkled with some Hainanese specialties and an inkling of French influence. The Hainanese chefed for the British colonial Malaysia and this, I learn, is the root of the dish chicken chop – well I always wondered!

Brioche (for a table of two) and Rye Bread (for larger tables)

We're all feeling hungry and Caning already has his eye on the manly Oxtail Soup (RM35++). This is a sinuously thick bowl of meatiness, the deeper you delve, the more you find, chunks of meat tangling with slivers of potato and vegetables. I love the slight coriander overtone, and Caning's delighted with his choice, mopping up the bowl with the remains of the bread and butter.

Baked Seafood Crab Shell (RM55++) is sensational with a jumble of crabmeat, shrimp, snapper and salmon vying for attention drenched in mushroom sauce and seasoned cheesy breadcrumbs. It's gooey, slippery and sensual. A light salad of sundried tomatoes and balsamic reduction is a clean complement to the dish.

Classic Prawn Cocktail (RM35++) was a trendy favourite in the UK from the 1960's to the 1980's and it's receiving a revival in current day KL. We enjoy plenty of plump prawns frolicking in lettuce slivers with hints of chopped egg and cucumber in a classic, simple presentation.

A gasp of approval greets our Sole Meuniere with Brown Butter and Forest Mushrooms (RM130++). Brown buttery juices from luscious mushrooms trickle over soft white fish and blend prettily with the meuniere sauce. Where the eyes feast, the tongue follows and this dish is ambrosial in textures and tastes.

A trio of Lamb Cutlets (RM120++) arrives on a mound of slinky mash. These are moist, tender bites of meat, and we're so glad there are three of them. The mashed potato is beautifully enhanced by viscously rich fresh gravy, which has Caning and I vying for the last drops. This dish is an instant Yum!

The Chateaubriand (RM300++) is traditionally a dish for two (although we think it could feed four), and recommended for a romantic dinner. Our sexy sharing of sizzling steak is carved at the table. Slicing through the deep brown pan seared outer reveals a juicy pink centre, just begging for a dribble of thick béarnaise and a pouring of meaty gravy. Silence reigns as we all savour the melding flavours of this delicious chunk of beef.

In Scotland we use the term 'pudding' for the sweet part of the meal, and a Scot would always prefer a hearty pud to a delicate dessert. What follows is definitively deserving of the pudding nomenclature, and be sure to not fill up too early in the meal, keeping at least a corner for sharing one of these. Each splendid serving is each crowned with its personal cacophony of forest fruits and fresh clotted cream.

Monica's choice is Sticky Date Pudding (RM45++), a densely date tinged dark sponge in a swathe of rich caramel sauce. It's moistly moreish and we all rave over the taste, vying for the last spoonful. Of course a gentleman would allow his date to have it…

I detect a hint of almond in the soft buttery Apple Crumble (RM45++). Creamy custard has only a light hint of cinnamon, a very filling end to my meal.

Bread and Butter Pudding (RM45++) is lightly flavoured, crème anglaise is poured on to soak into the airy white bread base. Caning closes his eyes and murmurs, 'it reminds me of my mother…'

Accor to triple stable of hotels by 2015 - The Borneo Post Online

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 10:02 AM PST

by Jonathan Wong, jonathanwong@theborneopost.com. Posted on January 21, 2014, Tuesday

KUCHING: Accor has announced plans to expand its hotel network in Malaysia with an additional 15 properties comprising 2,600 rooms throughout the country over the next two years.

This will amount to tripling its current stable of hotels to 20 hotels across all segments.

Gerard Guillouet, senior vice president for Accor Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore has highlighted the move as strategic and said, "Accor sees Malaysia as one of the top tourism destinations in Southeast Asia. The country is full of potential and has plenty of room for Accor to grow.

"We are focusing our energy to aggressively develop more hotels in the country across all market segments and with strong support from our hotel owners, tourism authorities as well as local communities, we are excited about the future prospects for our hotels in Malaysia."

The move was also opportune for the company as it was "just in time for Visit Malaysia Year 2014" and Guillouet further elaborated that, "We expect to open at least four hotels in both peninsular and East Malaysia this year including Novotel Melaka, Mercure Kota Kinabalu Eton, Ibis Styles Ipoh and Ibis Styles Sandakan Waterfront."

The momentum of new hotel openings would lead the group to achieve its target of 20 hotels by 2015, boosting job opportunities and economic benefits for the communities surrounding the hotel.

"It will allow us to become one of the leaders transforming the country's hospitality industry into the future," he added.

Accor, which owns and operates Pullman hotels, continues to open hotels across the spectrum to meet the needs of the different market segments visiting Malaysia with the mix of hotel segments in upscale (15 per cent), midscale (40 per cent) and economy (45 per cent).

"The network will also be geographically balanced with hotels in strategic business and leisure destinations throughout the country.

"Our long term strategy has been to emphasise development in central Malaysia first eventually expanding into other regions including Penang, Perak, Selangor, Melaka, Johor, Sabah, and Sarawak," Guillouet enthused.

"Apart from promoting our own hotels, we will also promote the site where our hotels are at. We are promoting the different destinations in Malaysia inclusive of Sarawak (Kuching), Sabah (Kota Kinabalu) as well as Kuala Lumpur (Putrajaya) and we are also linked to the Tourism Malaysia website."

1. Re: penang airport to hydro hotel

The time you give is major traffic jam time on Penang. Be prepared to sit on a bus for anything up to 1.5 hours, sometimes longer if there is a road traffic accident somewhere. The advantage of a taxi is that they weave in and out of traffic and know where there might be jams, are radio controlled so get notified of any accidents, and know which side roads to take. They cost more but will be a lot faster than the bus.

Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur

Cool, clean and contemporary Shangri-La Hotel's Japanese restaurant, Zipangu, is a gentle tranquilizer for the mind and quality nourishment for the body. It's one of he city's most popular locations for weekend brunch and, ambience, just as much as food, is the reason why it's so well adored.

Private Dining Room

Taking the traditional elements of Japanese design - nature, simple lines and a primarily neutral palette – Zipangu is an uncluttered, calming space. Modern Buddha Bar music with a touch of Zen hums behind the sounds of pots chiming from the kitchen.

Sushi Buffet

Bordering floor to ceiling windows overlook a manicured garden space. White pebbles make a floor margin for leafy plants with tall bamboo bunching and sprouting at regular intervals. A water feature cascades over a natural rocky wall and a table by the waterfall is one of the most sought after seats in the house.

The buffet is a long semi-rectangle. It's partially lined by glass windows protecting guests from splashes from the kitchen, while other segments allow face-to-face interaction with chefs. Light wood tables fill the room and we're content at our spot by the window soaking up some of the morning's muted light.

A host of Japanese favourites are featured in the spread. I attempt a sensible start with salads and sashimi. A sweet lotus root salad, lightly sweetened with a soy dressing, grabs my attention for a second round. Raw fish slices look lush and I admire the chef's skill as I witness him slice a fresh plate and add it to the buffet. Sushi too is available pre-prepared from the line-up or made personally to order. I include a plump juicy oyster and a fresh prawn on my plate for good measure. There's crab in its shell too, but that will have to wait until later.

Fresh Seafood

Hubby dives straight into the heavier dishes. He fills his plate with tempura hot out of the pot and, puts in an order for a variety of meat and seafood to be cooked on the teppan grill. Just finished with his fried food selection, the plate of barbecued items arrives to the table. Lightly charred and coated in a thin semi-sweet sauce, the baby octopus and salmon are the first to disappear. Small pieces of beef are pink in the middle, exactly to hubby's liking, and vanish soon after.

Next hubby takes a splattering from the cold dishes and I some soup. The mixed vegetable broth is full-flavoured, slightly salty and packed with enoki mushrooms, cabbage strips and balls of sticky mochi goo (Japanese gelatinous rice cakes). Hubby is salivating over the sashimi delicacies. He has salmon, tuna, butterfish and prawns. Carefully admiring each one before he devours it, then swallowing, is followed by either a satisfied, "Mmm," or an exclamation, "Superb!"

Sashimi

We're sipping on a free flow of hot Japanese tea and find it refreshingly fragrant and smooth. It's a great digestive and we have multiple cups before we're done. The tea is also available cold served over ice, with coffee as an option for those wanting a little more caffeine.

A noodle station too is tempting me, as is the baked Japanese custard chawanmushi. I don't have enough tummy space though as I want to save a little pocket for dessert, so mark them as something to try next visit.

Green Tea Truffle

A rainbow of desserts are cut into bite size pieces tempting me to try more than one. I exhibit some form of self-control and try to restrict my choices to just the Japanese inspired sweets. A mochi ball filled with lotus seed paste and a green tea truffle are sumptuously fantastic! Black sesame and green tea ice cream are the restaurant's specialties so a scoop of both of these are ordered too. A glass bowl cradles balls of dark grey and pale lime, dolloped with a wad of sugared red bean paste. They're creamy, but not heavy, providing a perfect ending to a delectable brunch.
